all the people i know are aware of Shakespeare.
a good chunk would know at least one of the Bronte sisters.
and Jane Austen.
etc etc etc...
but i kinda like Emily Dickinson myself. been having this book for years and i can still find nice quotes in it from time to time.
not all her works are for keeps, of course. but when she's good, she's good.
